This module highlights the importance of protecting employee data in global organizations, explores the basics of data protection and provides the tools to know which kinds of questions need to be asked when handling employee data. Using the European Union (EU) Data Privacy Directive as a model, a comprehensive data privacy legal framework is presented and the data privacy laws in two additional countries (Canada and India) are reviewed. Best practices to ensure the safe, legal and efficient treatment of data are suggested, and the role and competencies of global HR practitioners pertaining to data protection are discussed.
